BABY SIGNING TIME!
Rachel Coleman is a constant visitor in our home.
Well, at least virtually.
She is the creator of the Signing Time! videos. Signing Time! is a video series that teaches babies and young children and babies basic American Sign Language (ASL). There are 4 main series; there is one for babies, and one for each age 1, 2, and 3 years old. We have mostly watched the Baby Singing Time! videos (which I love), but my 3-year-old preschooler has begun to watch the Treeschooler series and he loves them. I will review those videos soon, so be on the lookout for that post.
Although my children are not deaf, we use the signs we learn from these videos every day. Anyone can benefit from the added communication simple sign language provides.
Beginning in my children’s first year of life, I teach them basic signs such as milk, water, more, all done, please, thank you, hungry, thirsty, bath, etc. These signs allow my children to communicate before they can developmentally speak.
BENEFITS OF BABY SIGN LANGUAGE
A preverbal child often becomes frustrated and agitated as he/she attempts—and frequently fails—to communicate needs and wants (which also brings grief to the parent or caretaker). Because of this, many experts believe that sign language, learned in the preverbal stage, can greatly diminish tantrums and frustrations.
In fact, babies as early as 6 months old can pick up some basic signs. So when a baby or child would normally only cry—and possibly point to what they want—sign language allows that child to more effectively communicate his/her specific desires.
YOU WON’T RUIN YOUR CHILD
I know, I know. Maybe you heard that signing becomes a crutch and may actually ruin a child’s speech development.
Or perhaps you read that you have forever failed as a parent because you taught your child to squeeze their hands when they wanted some milk.
Here’s what Psych Central says about that from their extensive research:
“It has been suggested that learning sign language can delay speech, but this is refuted by experts who claim that in fact, it aids speech development. Most baby signers speak earlier than babies who do not learn sign language.”
Increased speech development, early communicators, and fewer tantrums?
Take my money!
I want the full package.
And throw in five more so I can give them to my family and friends with young kids!
BILINGUAL SUPER ABILITIES
I enjoy learning new signs along with my children. While I doubt my children or I will become fluent in ASL, we can communicate basic ideas in another language. And that’s exciting.
It’s also exciting to be able to communicate from a distance, or in silence; it’s like a secret code.
For example, in our church meetings, I can sign “quiet” or “no” to my child without speaking out loud or causing a disturbance. And the family sitting next to us thinks I have ESP or extremely advanced mind-controlling powers to make my children do as I want without saying a word.
They think I have superpowers. It’s fine.
You want special powers too?
Watch these Signing Time! videos with your kids.
We try not to watch much TV on a daily basis. In fact, neither of my kids are interested in movies and traditional television shows. The only ones they enjoy are a select few educational programs.
And I mean very select and very few.
Literally only 2.
But, these Signing Time! videos made the cut, so make that 3.
Now, we don’t watch these videos for hours at a time; it only takes a few minutes before my kids are ready to get back to the sandbox. But, these videos keep their attention more than most others we have watched.
And they actually learn something from them!
It amazes me how quickly my kids learn the signs and how much they remember from only watching a video once.
LEARNING THROUGH MUSIC
The signs are taught through repetitive songs which also help children remember what they learn. The songs are catchy, fun, and I find myself humming them as I weed my garden or prepare dinner, “an apple’s hard to eat when you don’t have many teeth. Apples taste soooo good!”

We started by watching the first video in the Baby Signing Time! series; it is called, “It’s Baby Signing Time.”

No Wi-Fi needed! Road trip anyone?
Okay, maybe I’ll avoid a spontaneous road trip with 2 toddlers, but offline access does help with data limits.
